[ARCHIVED] HYDRANT FLUSHING MAY 30TH -JUNE 5TH

The hydrant flushing program for all fire hydrants in the Town of Newton water system will begin on Saturday, May 30, 2020 and run through Friday, June 5, 2020. The flushing for the water customers in Sparta and Andover will be conducted on Saturday, May 30, 2020 between the hours of 7:00am and 3:00pm.  The flushing for the water customers in Newton will be conducted from Sunday, May 31, 2020 through Friday, June 5, 2020 between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am.

The flushing schedule will be interrupted for inclement weather or emergency work only.  Newton Water Department personnel will be flushing hydrants during overnight hours in an effort to cause the least amount of inconvenience for utility customers.

During the above dates, water customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water.  These conditions result from the dislodging of materials in the water distribution mains.  The discoloration of the water is not harmful and will disappear shortly.  However, it is strongly recommended that water customers refrain from laundering clothing while the water is discolored.  Washing clothes with discolored water, which is caused by iron, may result in permanent stains on some fabrics.

Flushing of all fire hydrants in the water system is a regular operation of the Newton Water Department.  Flushing is generally repeated twice each year during the spring and fall seasons to prevent a heavy build-up of iron in the distribution lines.
