Mr. Thomas Trudgeon, Sr., part-time Recreation Supervisor, is responsible for the daily supervision of recreation activities. He also serves as the liaison between the Advisory Recreation Commission members and the Town manager.
The Commission consists of eight members, appointed by the Town Council. The main function of the Commission is to assist the Town Manager in identifying recreation interests and needs, and determining the impact that those interests and needs may have on the available recreation facilities. The Advisory Recreation Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, except for July and August. All Commission meetings are open to the public.
The Town of Newton owns recreation facilities at Memory Park which include a baseball field, Little League fields, two softball fields, a "T" ball field, a soccer field, a shelter, picnic area a tot lot, swimming pool, and a basketball court. A project for lighting the football fields and Little League baseball fields at Memory Park was initiated in 2000 and should be completed for the 2001 season. A roller hockey rink is located adjacent to the park and Ride facility as well.
Facilities at the Summit Avenue Park include a shelter, picnic area and a pond. In the winter, the pond is lighted at night until 10:00 p.m. for those who want to ice skate. Pine Street Park has a utility field, a tot lot, picnic area and a basketball court. Most of the recreation facilities are available for use by Newton residents. Application forms to reserve facilities may be obtained from the Recreation office on the second floor of the Municipal Building. Completed forms are reviewed by the Advisory Recreation Commission which grants permission for the use of facilities.
The Recreation Department had a very busy 2001-2002 year. Many major projects were worked on and completed. A new aerator and sprinkler was installed at Pine Street Park. The Little League baseball field at Memory Park was sodded and moved to regulation for the 200 foot outfield specifications. New equipment was installed at the Memory Tot Lot for young children to climb and enjoy. The new field which will be a softball field and or soccer/field hockey field located by the Park and Ride will come on line for the Spring of 2003 season. All of the above projects in addition to the recreational facilities already in place, will make Newton a leader in sports and recreation activities in Sussex County.
