The Town's surface water supply is the Morris Lake reservoir located in Sparta Township. This has been Newton's water source since the early 1900s.

Water Department personnel:
  • Operate and maintain the water system
  • Perform quarterly water meter readings
  • Inspect all fire hydrants semi-annually

Water Division employees are also in the process of changing all meters to the outside reader model. This project will be accomplished over a period of between eight and 10 years.

The new water filtration plant at Morris Lake has been operational since October 2004. Since the Filtration Plant come online in 2006, Newton has met the lead and copper limits as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

Wastewater Treatment Plant
The wastewater treatment plant, with a capacity to treat 1.4 million gallons per day, processes an average of .910 million gallons of wastewater flow daily. Plant personnel are responsible for operating four sewer pump stations and over 20 miles of sewer collection lines. It is important to note that the Newton Water and Sewer Utility operates on a self-sustaining basis without the use of tax dollars.
