Registrar of Vital Statistics

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the Registrar of Vital Statistics to record all births, deaths, and marriages occurring within the Town of Newton. The accumulation of information from vital records provides data about the events that occur throughout the entire State of New Jersey.

In addition, the Registrar is also responsible for:

• Issuing burial permits
• Disinterment permits
• Transit permits
• Marriage licenses
• Marriage certificates
• Birth certificates
• Death certificates
• Civil union licenses
• Civil union certificates

Marriage Licenses

Couples getting married in the state of New Jersey must apply for a marriage license at least 72 hours before the intended wedding date.  Application is made in the municipality where either partner resides.  You will need to know when and where your ceremony will take place and who will be the officiant.  An appointment is required - please call  (973) 383-3521 x255 to schedule.  

 Requirements for entering into a marriage

The following criteria must be met before two people can enter a marriage:

• Not be a party to another civil union, domestic partnership or marriage in this state or recognized by this state;
• Be at least 18 years of age.

 Please bring the following to your marriage license appointment:

• Proof of identity for both applicants and the witness by presenting your driver’s license, passport or state/federal I.D.
• Proof of Newton residency by at least one applicant
• One witness who is 18 years old or older
• The name, title, phone number and mailing address of your officiant
• The marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
